Gus stared at the flames in the fireplace as he thought about the day heâd met Ben. Although it was painful to walk back through his memories, it was worth it when he thought about how happy heâd been since Ben came into his life. He smiled down at Rudy before continuing his story.
âSo, there I was, knowing I had maybe two days left. The shelter was quiet, and it seemed like there were fewer people coming in. I knew I needed to hope for the best, but I just couldnât do it. At that point, Iâd made peace with the situation. Even though I hadnât been around for long, I supposed Iâd had a pretty good run. Maybe Iâd see my mother again.â
Razzy let out a soft sob and buried her face into Gusâs flank as he paused. He felt her warm fur mingle with his and her soft purrs. He didnât know how heâd gotten so lucky in his life, but the turn his life had taken was miraculous.
âIt was the end of the day, and the sun was going down outside. The helper had already come to clean our cages and make sure we had plenty of food and water. I ate a little and curled up in a ball, just wanting to sleep and not think any more. I heard a manâs voice, but kept my face covered up with my tail. It didnât matter. Like the lady said to that kid, who wanted a ratty tom cat?â
âWhat did the man say?â Rudy asked.
The young cat was sitting up, tail wrapped tightly around his paws. His big blue eyes looked sad.
âHe said he was looking for a dog to adopt. The girl who brought him back showed him the few that they had. The barking was intense as the man looked at the cages. I heard him talking with the girl and she asked him what he did for a living and he said he was a detective.â
Rudy let out a little meow and shifted his feet, sensing the story was about to take a happier turn.
âIs it who I think it is?â he asked.
âHush, Rudy. Let Gus talk.â
âThe girl said that maybe he should think about getting a cat, since his work meant heâd be out at all hours. A dog would be pretty hard to take care of if youâre not home all the time, I guess.â
âThey are needy creatures,â Razzy said, agreeing with a small smile.
âAnyway, the man looked around at a few of the other cats in the cages. By that point, Iâd cracked an eyelid, wondering if maybe this was the person for me. I saw his face and felt something strange in my heart. Itâs hard to explain.â
âLike youâd found the person you could connect with?â Razzy asked.
âExactly. I didnât want to get my hopes up, but there was something about this guy. I held my breath as he walked down the row of cages and finally came to a stop at mine.
